Born in Salem, Oregon, Lois grew up on a family farm operated by
her parents, Herman and Florence Hammer. In 1946, she married a
former Marine, Ed Neufeldt, who had just become a Safeway manager in
Coquille, Oregon. They transferred to The Dalles in 1953 during the
building of The Dalles Dam. In 1958 Lois, Ed and their three
children moved to Hood River to own and operated the Pine Grove
Grocery and have lived in Hood River ever since.
In the early fifties Lois painted a “paint by number” western scene
of covered wagons. She knew then that some day she would create her
own paintings. That day finally came in the winter of 1980 after
reading an ad in the Hood River News advertising “art classes –
beginners welcome”. After a two day oil painting class with Betty
Paeth and an 18X24 painting of Mount Hood tucked under her arm, Lois
gave up all previous crafting endeavors and got serious with a
palette knife and brush. Always eager to learn, she considers each
painting a challenge.
Lois has had the opportunity to study with several well known
artists, both locally and in Mexico, while still maintaining her own
unique painting style. Lois’ paintings and greeting cards include a
broad range of subjects from landscapes, flowers, barns, unusual
trees, seascapes and scenes of Mount Hood in watercolor and oil.
Lois and Ed spent twenty winters in San Carlos, Mexico. While there,
she was an active member of Ligue de Arte, painting desert and
familiar scenes of Mexico. Lois is a twenty-nine year member of the
Hood River Art Club. Her many paintings have found homes in Canada,
Russia, Germany, Mexico and many states across the United States.
